Artificial Intelligence in Space Medicine

Branch of medicine that studies the effect of extreme space conditions on astronaut health and provides methods to maintain and enhance their well-being is called space medicine. Corporation and frontier development labs are working together to collect data from astronauts that can be used for medical research. Spending time in space can be incredibly harmful to the human body, as it’s not designed for such conditions. In microgravity environment, astronauts can quickly loss muscle and bone density, just feel physically weakened, and experience psychological effect. So, this creates a cascade of challenges that can impact their health. Given that space mission cost hundreds of millions of dollars, ensuring the crew’s health is essential for mission success.

In in this article, we will explore the role of AI in space medicine. Artificial intelligence is used to collect biomarkers from astronauts both before they leave and when they return. AI systems make predictions about potential diseases and health outcomes that astronauts might experience, allowing for better health management and preparation for future mission.

Space Environment and Astronaut’s health

Space environments are extremely harsh and unforgiving for astronauts’ heath. In space, ionizing radiations can cause eye infection, skin burns, and serious disease such as cancer. In microgravity, human body experiences muscle and bone loss, along with altered blood circulation. Additionally, psychological issues can arise due to long-term isolation and confinement during spaceflight. Space medicine offers ways to enhance immunity and maintain crew health.
